Lebanon: Telecom Ministry will not ban WhatsApp services

Telecommunications Ministry will not ban WhatsApp services or charge for the application’s use, according to a statement released Tuesday by the telecommunications minister’s office.

“Local media spread inaccurate information about the Telecommunications Ministry cancelling the WhatsApp service or imposing charges on users,” the statement said.

The Telecommunications Ministry said it had no plan to charge users for the application, clarifying that any income for the ministry comes from extra services provided to citizens and from increasing the internet speed.

The ministry said it is working on increasing its income through providing a fiber optics network all over Lebanon and strengthening the mobile network coverage, which according to the statement would increase the ministry’s income without resorting to cancelling services or imposing charges.
